Risks Associated With Parabens

Over the past couple of years I have been more aware of the products that are going on my body.  You read and hear about ingredients that are potentially known to causes cancer yet they are still in countless health and beauty products on the shelves today.  I came across and article and felt obligated to share it.  Please pass the information along.

Are There Any Risks Associated With Paraben?

By Jan Sheehan

Parabens are the most widely used preservatives in cosmetics and personal-care products.

Parabens are a class of man-made chemicals used in the manufacture of a wide range of cosmetics and personal care products, including makeup, moisturizers, shaving gels, shampoos, personal lubricants and spray tan products. Concerns about the potential health risks of parabens began to emerge in 2004 when one study suggested they may increase the risk of breast cancer, leading some organizations to caution against their widespread use.

Parabens preserve cosmetics and personal care products by keeping bacteria, mold and fungi at bay. In 2010, parabens were the most widely used preservatives in personal care products, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Their superior preservative properties and low cost explain their widespread use.

Breast Cancer Risks

A 2004 study published in the “Journal of Applied Toxicology” detected parabens in the breast tumors of women with breast cancer. This is a concern because studies have shown that parabens have weak estrogen-like properties, and estrogen is known to play a role in breast cancer, reports the American Cancer Society. “While it has not been shown that parabens cause breast cancer, there’s a possibility that they could,” says Baier-Anderson.

Other Risks

The effect of parabens on the male reproductive system has been studied in mice. A 2002 Japanese study published in “Archives of Toxicology” found that parabens reduced sperm counts in male mice. Parabens have also been linked to skin cancer; paraben applied to skin that was exposed to sunlight caused changes in epidermis cells that could lead to skin cancer, suggests a 2006 Japanese study published in the journal “Toxicology.”

Avoiding Paraben

Parabens in consumer products are easy to identify because all ingredients must be listed on the label. If you are concerned about parabens, look for ingredients ending with the word paraben, such as methylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben and benzylparaben. They’re usually near the bottom of the ingredients list, notes. In 2009, some companies began voluntarily removing paraben from their products due to consumer concerns. Products made without paraben usually state “paraben-free” on the packaging.

Below are products that my family currently uses and I find to be fantastic.

The 2 Minute Face

The 2 Minute Face

We all strive to look great when we’re getting ready in the morning but lets face it, we just don’t have enough time to do a full face of “glam makeup”.  With these quick and easy steps, (and no makeup brushes needed), you will leave the house looking like a million bucks and more importantly, your natural self!

Make sure to #Teambeautifl for us to feature your “2 minute face” on our instagram and twitter! Enjoy!

1. Take your favorite cream eyeshadow and your ring finger and swipe a small layer on your eyelids.

2. Curl your lashes upwards with your trusty Mascara wand.  Make sure you to give your lashes two coats. We do not want to leave the house with panda eyes right?!

3. SPF Foundation- Make sure you are wearing SPF 30 before heading outside.  Combining a drop or two of your foundation with a drop of your SPF moisturizer will create lightweight coverage and protection!  I use Image Skincare because they make a tinted moisturizer with a 30 SPF…..win win!

4. This step will be your favorite.  Grab yourself a lip stain and remember to have fun with colors! Go for a berry, red or pink. Keep a glossy lip balm handy to keep it bright and I assure you, it willl look great!!  Revlon Color Stay happens to be a favorite of mine and lasts up to 10 hours.

Remember to shine bright today!
